Yin and Yang are connected and contained within one another. They are black and white forms that together form a circle and contain the opposite color within themselves – meaning there are aspects of Yin within Yang and Yang within Yin. Alone they represent one part of the whole. Together they create the whole. As human beings, we don’t like extremes. Most people prefer not to live on the top of the mountain or below ground level. We prefer someplace where the wind (Feng) and water (Shui) will not destroy us and our homes. Examples of Yin are curved shapes, delicate objects or images, soft, dark and cold. Yang examples include angular, large shapes, bright, hot and open. Ideally, most environments contain Yin and Yang elements in a balanced way to provide a balanced experience for the people living in the space.
